Easter celebrates the heart of our faith: Jesus died for our sins, and on the third day He rose again, conquering sin and death. A good Easter book helps children understand God’s love, the gift of forgiveness and the joy of new life in Him.
Whether you’re a new parent or a grandparent, these books are a wonderful way to share the true meaning of Easter, and they make great Easter basket gifts. If you only have a minute, start with my top three.

How I chose: I looked for books that tell the true Easter story clearly, fit the age they’re written for, and spark good conversations.
1. Best Overall: The Easter Storybook
The Easter Storybook: 40 Bible Stories Showing Who Jesus Is (Bible Storybook Series)
Highlights
- 40 full-color illustrated stories
- A Bible passage and question with each
- One page a day for the 40 days of Lent
Watch-outs
- Best for ages 4 to 8
Best for: families who want to read together through Lent.
Skip it if: you want a quick board book for toddlers.
My favorite children’s Easter book. Its 40 stories follow Jesus’ whole life, from the temple as a boy to His appearances after the resurrection, so children see Him as Teacher, Good Shepherd, Savior and King.
Each story cites its Bible passage, opens with a key verse and ends with a reflection question. It’s a perfect companion to The Advent Storybook, and the illustrations are absolutely beautiful.
2. Best for Building Anticipation: Easter Is Coming!
Easter Is Coming! (padded)
Highlights
- Tells the story from Eden to Easter
- "But Easter is coming!" refrain
- Padded, durable cover
Best for: reading again and again in the days before Easter.
This book connects Easter to the first sin, Jesus’ birth and the events of Holy Week. The repeated phrase “But Easter is coming!” keeps the story hopeful, and the colorful pages are sturdy enough for little hands.
3. Best Board Book: Jesus Rose for Me: The True Story of Easter
Jesus Rose for Me: The True Story of Easter (A Beginner's Gospel Story Book)
Highlights
- Board book for ages 3 to 7
- Vivid, modern illustrations
- Questions that invite a response
Best for: young children learning that Jesus is stronger than death.
Part of The Beginner’s Gospel Story Bible series, this board book focuses on the resurrection, which many Easter books skip past. It helps children understand that Jesus is more powerful than death and that His resurrection gives us hope.
4. Best for Gentle Conversations: God Gave Us Easter
God Gave Us Easter (God Gave Us Series)
Highlights
- Little Cub learns about Easter from her father
- Gentle on the crucifixion
- Board book edition available
Watch-outs
- Doesn't go into the crucifixion
Best for: younger children, especially those who have faced loss.
On a walk through the Arctic, Little Cub learns from her father about God’s plan and the meaning of Easter. It addresses death and new life gently, which makes it a good choice for children who have experienced loss.
5. Best Basket Stuffer: An Easter Egg Hunt for Jesus
An Easter Egg Hunt for Jesus: God Gave Us Easter to Celebrate His Life (Forest of Faith Books)
Highlights
- Illustrated by Lee Holland
- Same animals as the Christmas books
- Connects egg hunts to the resurrection
Best for: tucking into an Easter basket.
Little Bunny and his friends prepare for an Easter egg hunt and learn about the new life Jesus’ resurrection offers. It’s a relatable story with a deeper message.
What a good Easter book for kids should teach
- God’s love, and the sacrifice Jesus made for our salvation
- That on the third day He rose, conquering sin and death
- That His resurrection gives us new life and hope
My final picks
This Easter, give your child or grandchild a book they’ll love alongside their Easter basket treats, and help them learn the true meaning of Easter and the love of Jesus.
