Picking a study Bible is a big decision. You’ll carry it to small group, open it for sermon prep, and maybe hand it down someday. In 25 years of church leadership, serving in youth, couples and men’s ministry, I’ve watched the right study Bible turn “I don’t get it” into “I see it now” more times than I can count.
This guide compares 13 of the most popular study Bibles side by side: who each one is for, what stands out, and what to watch out for. If you only have a minute, start with my top three.

How to choose a study Bible
- Translation first. Pick the translation you’ll actually read. ESV and NASB are more word-for-word; NIV, NLT and CSB read more easily. See our overview of Bible versions.
- Notes that match your goal. Teaching calls for verse-by-verse notes. Daily growth calls for application notes.
- Size and print. The best study Bibles are big. If you’ll carry it, look for a smaller edition or a large print version for comfort.
- Cover and binding. Hardcover is the most affordable. Leather and imitation leather covers last longer with daily use.
